Visited The Flask on a Saturday, not too busy and lacked any notable atmosphere. My parents decided this was to be the venue for my mum's 60th birthday lunch, bit surprised myself as it was decidedly average and more in keeping with the style of a Wetherspoons, which as I discovered when I tried the food, it was not!

Wetherspoons is located just around the corner and is what it is, you know what you will get most of the time, and the food is priced accordingly!

This was probably the worst pub grub that I have ever tasted, and even at that, all I could manage was one mouthful which for me is a first, being a big guy.

I ordered the blackened chicken, having tried it in a few pub/gastro pubs within a 20 mile radius. When I saw that it came drenched in a curry sauce of the powdered variety, I should have heeded the warning. Why on earth would you want to drown the spice mix on blackened chicken with a curry sauce?

I soon discovered why, I found the combination strange and asked for the curry sauce on the side and though this would be more apt for the chips which accompanied the chicken and saffron (allegedly) rice.

The only thing saffron about the rice was the yellow food colouring used, there was no taste of saffron at all, the overpowering flavour from the rice was water. It tasted like a packet of microwave rice, and even that is slightly more palatable!

Moving to the blackened chicken, picture a well use leather sole which has been removed from the sole of a shoe by a cobbler. Due to the size and thickness of the chicken breast, I would say that the sole had been removed from a child's shoe, as it was at best half of a breast which had been flattened to the thickness of a schnitzel.

Then place that sole in your mouth and attempt to chew it, that sums up the taste of the blackened chicken breast at The Flask. The curry sauce turns out was necessary to provide some juice/liquid to a dish which was as dry as Wimbledon's Centre Court yesterday when Andy Murray defeated Novak.

When I asked the waitress to take the dish away as it was horrible, dry and overcooked, adding that the rice tasted as if it had came out of a packet, she looked at me aghast! Now come on if that is the standard of fayre on offer here, I cannot believe for one minute that you have never had a customer return they're food before!

The starters looked okay, nothing great, portions for all starters, mains and desserts were on the meagre side, for the prices that were charged. Consequently after the failed attempt at blackened chicken I opted not to have a dessert either. On a plus side the two pints of Stella were good, but I would have rather had a nice meal along with the rest of my family.

To summarise, service okay, food not too good, portion sizes poor and all in all overpriced for what it is. There are many better food venues than this around the three towns area, I would suggest that you only go here if everywhere else is fully booked, you are famished and will eat anything or have no taste buds at all!
